The cutting-edge Welsh company Grounds for Good, well-known for its dedication to sustainability and fine craftsmanship, announced the release of its newest product: Grounds for Good Gin in paper Frugal Bottles from Frugalpac.
The Frugal Bottle has a carbon footprint up to six times lower than a glass bottle and is five times lighter than one too. This pioneering release marks a significant step forward in the spirits industry, combining eco-friendly packaging with exceptional taste.
The launch comes just weeks after Aldi hit the headlines for becoming the first UK supermarket to stock own-label wines in the paper Frugal Bottles in their stores across the UK.
Crafted with precision at the esteemed Hensol Castle Distillery, Grounds for Good Gin embodies the essence of both tradition and innovation. The distillery’s commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of production, from sourcing locally grown botanicals to utilizing cutting-edge distillation techniques and used coffee grounds.
The decision to package Grounds for Good Gin in the Frugal Bottle underscores the brand’s dedication to environmental responsibility. These bottles are not only five times lighter than a glass bottle and durable but also fully recyclable, significantly reducing their carbon footprint by 84% compared to glass.
Eco-conscious practice within the spirits industry, reusing old coffee grounds
By embracing this sustainable alternative, Grounds for Good Gin continues to lead the charge in eco-conscious practices within the spirits industry. During lockdown, Dr Rosie Oretti, a recently retired NHS medic, started volunteering in her local coffee shop and realised how much coffee grounds were going to landfill.
98 million cups of coffee are made every day across the UK. But coffee grounds that end up in landfill can omit potent greenhouse gases, including methane, which is around thirty times more potent than carbon dioxide.
Rosie decided to set up a Grounds for Good to begin reusing old coffee grounds for beauty products, candles, chocolate, body scrubs and fire lighters. Now they’re recycling the used coffee grounds to make gin.
Dr Rosie Oretti, founder of Grounds for Good, said: “We are thrilled to introduce Grounds for Good Gin in the Frugal Bottle. It’s the first Welsh gin to be packaged in these innovative bottles. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. By recycling used coffee grounds, we’re stopping them going to landfill and emitting methane. Making gin from these grounds and putting it in a bottle made from recycled paperboard seemed the right thing to do. Less waste, more taste! By partnering with Frugalpac and Hensol Castle Distillery, we are able to offer consumers a sustainable gin that not only tastes exceptional but also aligns with our values of environmental stewardship.”
Frugalpac CEO Malcolm Waugh added: “We were hugely impressed by Grounds for Good’s commitment to sustainability and recycling. We use recycled paper to make our Frugal Bottles and they use used coffee grounds to make their amazing gin. Put the two together, and it’s probably the most sustainable spirit launch we’ve ever been involved with! We love working with innovative drinks brands and helping them to decarbonise their packaging. A survey by ProWein found one in four UK retailers plan to stock paper bottles in the UK over the next few years. With Aldi and Sainsbury’s already selling Frugal Bottles, we’re sure Grounds for Good’s Gin in our bottle will be a huge success.”
