GS1 Digital Link from traditional barcode: the evolution of packaging

The traditional barcode is reaching its operational limits. With the introduction of 2D barcodes, for example those based on GS1 Digital Link, packaging is increasingly becoming a digital information hub. Retail trials such as those conducted by Tesco, together with initiatives like GS1 Sunrise 2027, clearly show that dynamic codes are set to become the new standard.

For brands and packaging professionals, one central question is now clear: how can 2D barcodes be integrated into existing packaging solutions in a flexible, efficient, and future-proof way? A particularly smart answer is provided by banding solutions from ATS-Tanner.

Banding as a bridge between physical packaging and digital intelligence

Bands are far more than just a bundling or securing element. In combination with modern marking systems, they become the ideal carrier surface for 2D barcodes – without requiring fundamental changes to the existing packaging design. ATS-Tanner enables 2D codes to be integrated directly onto the band with precision, high readability, and reliable process stability – inline, automated, and scalable.

This is especially relevant because 2D codes can carry significantly more information than traditional barcodes: batch-specific data, expiration dates, proof of origin, or links to digital services. The band positions this data exactly where it is needed – visible, scannable, and compliant with standards.

Greater flexibility in times of increasing requirements

Regulatory requirements such as the Digital Product Passport (DPP), growing consumer demands for transparency, and the push for greater sustainability are increasing the amount of information that must appear on packaging. At the same time, available space remains limited. This is where bands demonstrate their strengths:

  • Dynamic content: 2D codes on bands can be adapted to specific markets, languages, or batches without redesigning the primary packaging;
  • Updates without redesign: changes to data or linked content can be made at any time – the packaging stays the same, while the code becomes “intelligent.”
  • Serialization and traceability: batch- or serial-related information supports traceability, quality management, and recall processes.

Added value along the entire value chain

With ATS-Tanner banding solutions, the 2D barcode becomes a true value driver:

  • Production and quality: precise marking supports expiration date monitoring, recall management, and process reliability;
  • Retail: digital shelf-life data enables automated price reductions, POS blocks for expired goods, and helps reduce food waste;
  • Consumers: a simple scan provides reliable information exactly when needed – about ingredients, allergens, sustainability, or recipe ideas;
  • Sustainability: fewer packaging changes, less waste, and better use of shelf-life data.

Future-proof identification with ATS-Tanner

2D barcodes are here to stay. With ATS-Tanner bands, they can be integrated quickly, flexibly, and efficiently into existing packaging processes. This transforms packaging from a simple information carrier into a digital touchpoint – ready for new regulatory requirements, smarter retail processes, and well-informed consumers.
