Developing a process that would be compatible with current packing equipment and preserve the quality and freshness of ground coffee and beans was an ambitious task.
Transitioning from multi-layer to mono-material packaging isn’t an overnight process. It requires innovation, rigorous testing, and a committed partner. Fortunately, Migros shared our dedication to sustainability and provided invaluable feedback that helped us refine our solution every step of the way.
The solution is EcoVerHighPlus
In early 2023, they launched trials with EcoVerHighPlus, a mono PP laminate with high barrier properties. Initial results were promising, and Migros conducted shelf-life tests and coffee tastings to evaluate performance.
Based on their feedback, Constantia optimized the structure to enhance recyclability while maintaining the necessary protective properties and ensuring the coffee’s freshness and quality. By October 2023, they ran the first fully printed EcoVerHighPlus laminate at Constantia Flexibles. In January 2024, a long-run production test confirmed that the material performed seamlessly on Migros’ packaging line.
From concept to commercial success
After months of development and testing, the transition to mono PP packaging became a reality. By May 2024, Delica AG, the manufacturing plant, officially began shifting the first Café Royal SKUs to the new specification.
In October 2024, commercial production started at Constantia Pirk, where they fine-tuned the print-web to ensure the updated packaging maintained the distinct design and brand identity of Café Royal.
The following month, they delivered the first commercial batch to one production site of Delica AG, part of the Migros Industries AG, seamlessly packed its first 500 g coffee bean packs without requiring significant modifications to its packaging line. Soon after, the new packaging was awarded a certificate for recycling from Interseroh, verifying compliance with DIN 13430 standards.
Launching the more sustainable coffee packaging
By mid-December 2024, Migros introduced the new Café Royal recyclable-ready softbags to consumers, proving that sustainability and premium quality can go hand in hand. This achievement was made possible through strong collaboration between Migros, Constantia Flexibles, and other industry partners, demonstrating how partnerships can drive real change in more sustainable packaging.

With regulatory shifts like the PPRW requirements in 2030, the transition to recyclable-ready packaging is no longer optional—it is essential. Our early partnership with Migros underscores the importance of proactive innovation in meeting these demands.
