The Prevented Ocean Plastic initiative is launching with strong support from leading stakeholders across the supply chain, accelerating its path to market.
The initiative is expected to stop 500 million plastic cups from entering the ocean in its first year, enough to wrap around the Earth.
Collected, washed and processed
Once collected and washed, the material is then processed using world-first novel technology, turning it into high-quality, food-safe recycled polypropylene (rPP). The innovation, in the novel technology stage, sees each batch third-party scientifically tested according to industry standards and then supplied by Bantam Materials UK Ltd (Owner of the Prevented Ocean Plastic programme) to key offtakers.
The new initiative is part of the Prevented Ocean Plastic scalable franchise model which can be repeated in any at-risk coastal community.
The supply chain info
- Feedstock Source: Post Consumer PP from Southeast Asia;
- PCR source: rPP pellets toll processed by PETMAN (Austria):
- Controlled collection and sortation: Prevented Ocean Plastic (POP) collection centres in Southeast Asia collect, segregate, sort and distribute material under the same Standards as our rPET supply chain:
- Food‑safety process: PETMAN uses Starlinger Viscotec equipment, whose process has competent‑authority approval. All RIN/RON/RFN identifiers are listed on the European Commission website.

As a novel technology, each batch is NIAS tested, generating data to support Annex III compliance documentation. Traceability and sustainability delivered via the Prevented Ocean Plastic programme governed by third party audited standards.
“For Innovia, a source of EU food contact approved polypropylene (PP) from a mechanically recovered post-consumer source is a game changer. We can now make films for label and flexible packaging in the food and beverage space and contribute to circularity and sustainability. A great team of people have contributed to the process and have accelerated this mechanically recovered post-consumer PP to the eagerly awaited EU food contact rPP:” Neil Hudson, Technology Expert – Recycling & Sustainability, Innovia Films.
